Difference between business strategy, business plan, and business model?

Posted on October 20th, 2009 by admin in business strategy | 1 Comment »

Anyone know what the difference a business strategy, business plan, and business model? I havent really been able to figure out the difference.
Thank you

In business, these terms often get used somewhat interchangeably, but here is my understanding. A business strategy is a high level plan. For example, if I wanted to start a chain of shoe stores, my strategy might be "To open a series of shoe boutiques, offering hard to get upscale European brands to the discriminating high net worth consumer". The business model is then how you plan to achieve the strategy, such as, "To open five upscale stores in next five years, each located in high end malls in wealthy communities and averaging 1,500 square feet. The well trained sales staff, will cultivate relationships with our customers, throwing private invite only events throughout the year." The model should have more detail than the strategy. Finally, you get to the plan, which is the most detailed. The plan is usually by month and by year and would include sales figures and estimated costs. The plan usually shows how much profit the business will generate, and how those profits will increase over time. If the business is borrowing start up costs, it will need to show the repayment of those funds. All three are used to raise funds for starting a business. You basically want the lender or investor to understand your goals, know how you plan to achieve them and what profit will be generated if you are successful.

What is a good business strategy for a Manufactured homes business?

Posted on October 6th, 2009 by admin in business strategy | 1 Comment »

Can you provide some details concerning the different business strategies in relation to the Manufacured homes business in specific and the industry in general

What aspects of this business are you considering? If you want to buy them and place them on vacant land to sell, you’ll need a boat-load of cash for the land to start, then $$$ for permits & to lay the foundation and bolt it down. You will also need a down-payment & get a loan if not paying cash for the home itself.
Don’t buy an older pre-’76 home, no matter how cheap if at all possible. Aluminim wiring makes them a high risk for lenders & insurers. You’ll end up paying high % rates and such. Post ‘76 homes with cheaper % rates & less maintanance cost less even though they have a bigger price tag. People also make $$$ pulling older homes off mobile home parks, selling them to farmers or in Mexico, and placing new ones in for profit. Hard to get in to as an outsider. Old-timers have it wrapped up but you can always try charming your way in. It works in those parks.
Do your homework. Check in to getting a mobile home sales license. Different in CA than realtor license. Quicker & less painful.
The industry in general has always done well and will continue to do so as long as "sticks & bricks" are so expensive. There will always be a place for them.
If you can’t find the land and place them, work for someone else only until you can open your own showroom. It’s the owners who make the most $$$.
