Tips on starting a residential cleaning business?
I would like to start cleaning homes in the evening. I am looking for tips on getting started. I would like to make a quote sheet for customers but I am unsure how much to charge for certain services. I would love any advice regarding the quote sheet or anything thing else I need to consider when starting my business.
My friend and I did this for 14 years 11 together and the last 4 on my own.I don’t know how many people will want you in their home in the evenings, but here goes. Call the other cleaning companies in your area and get their prices and ask about what they charge extra for and what’s included in weekly cleaning. Then underbid them. DO NOT do anything extra for free or they will come to expect it and put more an more on you each time. DO NOT EVER give a price quote, without looking at the job first. We charged $10 extra on the first cleaning anyway to bring the house up to our standards. They are ALWAYS worse then they appear once you get into it! We ripped ourselves off a couple times not bidding enough on a job! It’s not fun, so be careful! Leave the price open for adjustments if necessary! An oven or doing a fridge will take one person about an hour so always charge extra for that. Don’t do windows, that’s a whole other can of worms! We put two flayers on one sheet of paper with a coupon on the bottom for $5 off their first cleaning. Then we told them they could get $10 off for each referral job we got. Business will spread fastest by word of mouth. Once you’re established, you can get rid of the people you don’t like working for and just keep the easiest jobs. Don’t forget to raise your prices after you’re well established as you’ll be more popular than the services if you’re honest and do a great job! There is good money to be made and a flexible schedule too. Oh and we gave the weekly people a better rate than the once in awhile’s too! Good Luck! PS the prices I spoke of are old, you may need to adjust for today’s times.

Official government site designed to help answer questions on small businesses and starting them up. It’s full of everything you will need to know from buying ro selling an existing business, to how to grow your business, to the tax implications, to sales & marketing.
Definitely the first place you should take a look…and as it’s official, it should be unbiased in terms of the advise it gives.
Think about speaking to an accountant – most will offer their first session for free. They can advise you on the best type of business for you and your tax.

How should I go about starting an exotic animal business?
I plan on starting off with smaller exotics like cavies, and genets and working up to larger animals like monkeys and big cats. If you are exotic animal owner, zookeeper, or have a business like this please help. Thanks.
I am interested in starting a business like this.

Please don’t call me crazy because I know what I’m getting my self into.
I own my own small exotic animal, reptile and exotic bird breeding business. I have over 260 species of critters, and let me tell you it’s a full time job. If you think that you are going to get into this thing and make a bunch of money you are sadly mistaken, you should look at it more as a hobby that SOMETIMES pays for itself. Your first step is to find a location, preferably with a house out in the country, with its own well that flows at a minimum of 15 gallons per minute (you will need A LOT of water, and its MUCH cheaper to not be on city water) the second thing you need to look for is zoning regulations and restrictions. For instance in Texas (where I live) you can basically have anything you want from a ape to a zebra as long as you live outside of the city, in the county and own a exotic animal permit (cost you like $65/year no application process sold where ever fishing license are sold) if you are going to get BIG as you so seem to want to do, I would suggest that you marry, or become intimate friends with a very good veterinarian. Veterinarian care can either be your least expensive problem (most of the time) or your most expensive (when something expensive and rare gets sick which WILL happen even in the wild) you must understand that you are responsible for your animals because you so choose to have them at your facility in your care. Here are other things to consider:
If you have a lot of carnivores, get a hunting license and a gun, learn how to use it, and apply for a road kill collection permit. Invest in a heck of a lot of chest freezers, anything you shoot or collect, you are going to need to freeze for 6 weeks before you feed it off. This will significantly cut down on your feeding costs, as it is how I provide food for my larger snakes (rabbits baby….free rabbits..) consider this: Buy a large rabbit? $8-$20 EACH if you can find them and most pet stores wont sell you Bugs Bunny if they know where its going…*(snakes don’t care if its alive or dead, just warm and moves a bit use your imagination, and some grabbers, after some conditioning, they will eat completely thawed dead rabbits without hesitation)* now time to shoot some bunnies DURING the season: Hunting license about $25/YEAR rabbits? $0.02 each for .22lr bulk solid ammo + I gallon freezer bags @ $0.27 each= $0.29/ each there is generally no season on the larger jack rabbits.
If you have a lot of herbivores: make friends with a farmer whom will sell you hay/alfalfa at a before market or strait market price, this way you don’t have to pay any commercial markups. Even if you don’t have much that eats it, its always good to have on hand, makes good bedding and most herbivores like to munch on this even mice, hamsters, gerbils and so forth. You will also need to invest in a storage facility to keep this up off the ground (wooden pallets) and dry (barn or metal structure)
Capitol Investment: Try and find a pet store near buy that is getting screwed by buying from some wholesaler like Rainbow Pets or so forth and buying hamsters at $8/each which most are sickly. Do not try a PetCo or PetSmart as they have contracts and are NOT aloud to buy things from outside sources. Your best bet is a local pet store that is on a good main road in your town or the towns next to you. Hamsters, Gerbils, Rabbits, feeder rodents (mice, and rats) are always a staple in these places. Feel free to e-mail me for some more information. And further information on how to get started.
Any scope for starting own business for a person having knowledge on IT infrastructure(voice and data applicat
I have 12 years of experience in systems and network administration for multiple companies in India. Now i am looking around to start own business based my experience/skills.
I have good contacts for getting venture capital starting own business. Please advice the area which I will have lot of scope in the long run.
Any scope of starting own business for a person having experience in IT infrastructure(voice and data) planning and designing.
Here in the United States, we have companies that specialize in the planning and design of telephone and data systems.
These consultants do not sell or install any equipment or cabling, but simply act as planners and designers. They typically work with architects, owners, and builders as they plan for telephone/IT systems in new and remodeled buildings. They produce plans and specifications for the telephone/data infrastructure, assist the owner in obtaining bids from qualified installation contractors, and observe the installation to assure that requirement of the specifications are being met.
Capital requirements for this type of business are usually fairly small and demand (at least here in the US) is fairly strong. The limiting factor appears to be the availability of qualified telephone/data designers.
I would like to know all the legalities of starting a business?
I’m thinking (after I get a degree) of starting a business in holistic health care. I would start off small and local, and then hopefully get an office somewhere.
I’d just like to know all of the legal things to it. Licenses and tax forms and where to get all of that, and who do I have to tell that I’m starting a business to make sure it’s legal?
You need to see a local lawyer. I say local because most cities have laws regulating businesses, especially health related businesses.
When starting a business, is it better to go on your own or buy a franchise?
I am 44 years old. I have years of management experience and I am tired of working for other people so I am interested in starting a business. I don’t really know what to try or the best way to go about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It may help you decide by understanding the pros and cons of franchising
Advantages:
- Your risk is reduced as you are buying into a proven system for operating the business and generating profits.
- Though there are substantial fees for buying in to an established major brand franchise such as McDonald’s or Subway, a newer and smaller franchise operation might cost you less initially than doing your own independent startup.
- The business support system is built in (e.g. training, financing, money management).
- The psychological support system is in place … you plug into a network of business owners facing the same daily challenges and problems.
- The marketing support system is established.
- The brand is already built – you plug in to its customer base.
- You get a group rate – to reduce the costs of supplies, inventory, equipment and even medical, dental and eye care.
- It’s easier to recruit good help
- Your opportunities for growth are better – successful brand franchises generate steady cash flow and banks are more willing to provide loans
Disadvantages
- It’s their company = your name will not be on the door or the signs
- It’s their product or service = you are selling a product or service that is created and controlled by the franchisor.
- It’s their system = you will have to do things the way the franchisor wants them done
- It’s not always cheaper = For a well established and successful brand, your startup costs might be considerably higher
- If you have low credit rating, it can be tought to get financing for even a small home based franchise
- You may have to pay up front and annually, too.
- You may not get all you want from the corporate office
- You will have to learn to go along to get along = there may be times when you feel more like an employee of the franchisor than a co-owner
- Cannibalization (profit eaters) = franchisors sometimes get so eager to keep growing that they allow franchisees to locate so close to one another that they cut into one another’s profits
- Success is not guaranteed in a franchise or any other business
- You will still need a lawyer and an accountant
- If things go bad for one franchisee in your group, it can hurt all the others
