Not only is starting a business in Japan expensive, there are many regulations and constraints. You must incorporate your business and register with the tax office and arrange to pay several different taxes. An auditor will be sent to check your records each year and the government will often try to increase your tax and you will have defend your bookkeeping. In certain industries in Japan, you must join groups promoting your business or be ostracized from the industry. You also must pay for the research required to prove that any goods imported from other countries into Japan are safe. Add the expense of an office or store and employees and having a winning investment would be difficult.
References :
It's not easy to start a business anywhere. And Japan would be even harder. Rents / land is much higher as there's much less space. The whole country of Japan is about the size of California.
If you're not Japanese, there will be immigration and language problems as well. Whether or not it would be a winning investment would depend on how much the business is needed at this time.Bearing in mind Japan is in a major recession at this time,I'm willing to bet there aren't many new places starting up.
References :
I know in Japan it would be difficult at the least. Property is extremely expensive, and not just any joe shmoe can but property in Japan. You have to be a Japanese citizen to buy property, so you would basically have to have some one in Japan buy property for you and own the business and let you run it.... which would be unlikely. You would also need to know Japanese fluently. It is a difficult language to master.
As far as China goes... I haven't been there but I can't imagine that it would be easy there either especially with communism and all.
References :
currently living in Japan
